Why cant we(KERALA) think like Bhutan and promote HYDRO

Post by shineseb »

KERALA has huge hydro potential when compared to any other states. But here things are quite different.

Our Demand is around 4100MW and our hydro generation is not even 25% of it. We have studies where it says our potential for pumped storage scheme is around 4000 MW.

Once again we need to understand that hydro is the best environment friendly plant compared to any other source for generation. Hydro has following advantages.

1. Quick start stop facility
2. Used as spin reserve, can increase the load or reduce the load in fraction of a minute
3. Gives better power system stability.
4. can generate when demand is there and hence it acts as a big battery storage.
5. Best solution for reactive power support
6. One of the best solution for Renewable energy

Advantage over Solar.
1. Land required is very less compared to solar
2. No reactive power support in solar where as hydro provides you it relentlessly
3. Solar has no inertia and it weakens the system. Hydro has inertia to provide power system stability.
4. Very less harmonics issues.
5. Small hydro plants in every panchayat will be solution for reducing interruption in hilly area. Solar micro grid has limitations.
6. Power can be tapped at any time from hydro, where as it is available only during a sunny day for solar.

So lets support athirappilly and other projects.

The need of hydro is very critical. What we need is promote hydro. We need Athirapilly, Athirapilly need Poringalkuthu right bank. The details analysis based on post flood 2018 is attached for discussion.
