Hi Friends,
Here we start our new forum only for discussion of TECHnical matters involved in power sector. Hope this new initiative of KSEBEA will bring more people to share their knowledge\
Thanks,
Shine

Dear shine
I opened this topic as a starter to much more higher discussions that can be done in Reactive power( viz.SVC,FACTS devices, Capability diagrams of generators etc). But as a beginning many ( that an include me also) may not be very clear about the concept of Reactive power still and effects of its flow in the system.(voltage dips/stabilty),how tap changers of transformers affects the flow etc..

The famous beer-mug analogy (as engineers we know this better---pun intended) in which the beer is termed as active power and foam is the reactive power is the simple explanation of the same. Is there any other way it can be simply put forward..

The topic of elimination of reactive power may shoot into significance in near future because of the proliferation of Air conditioners in the Kerala system

thanks a million for this simplest way of explanation. there are other ways to explain as well .. like carrying a bucket full of water using ladder to fill a tank etc..., But foam as reactive power is quite good , digesting and fun way of expressing it. I hope this forum will help us to share our knowledge and create a knowledge cloud..

What is the importance of Reactive power in power system ? what it will do in actual system?

as per my understanding reactive power controls the variations in system voltage. Depends on PF every power system equipments may consume or produce a reactive component and this will impact the grid voltage. Hence we will asked to provide more Var or act as synchronous condenser to compensate these variation in voltage. In fact importing below a set voltage is more costly. So to achieve quality of supply(product) Reactive power is very important.
